Only 1 in 4 master’s Programmes in Germany Is Taught in English, Finds Bengaluru Consultancy
Reknown Edu Services launches a free tool covering 9,858 German Master’s programmes and publishes its complete study-abroad consulting fee list online.
BENGALURU, OCTOBER 2026: Germany continues to attract Indian students seeking internationally recognised postgraduate education, particularly because many public universities offer tuition-free study options. However, choosing the right university involves more than finding an affordable course. Language requirements, eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and additional costs can significantly influence a student’s admission prospects.
Addressing these challenges, Reknown Edu Services, a Bengaluru-based study-abroad consultancy, has introduced a free German University Shortlister covering 9,858 Master’s programmes. The firm has also published its complete consulting fee list online, giving students and families greater clarity about the costs of professional study abroad guidance.
German Master’s Programmes: What the Data Reveals
According to the company’s dataset, compiled from the DAAD International Programmes database, Hochschulkompass and university websites, only a minority of Germany’s listed master’s programmes are taught entirely in English.
Of the 9,858 programmes analysed, 2,385 are taught exclusively in English, while 120 combine English and German. The remaining 7,353 are taught in German. These figures highlight why students should carefully assess language requirements before finalising their university shortlist.
English proficiency is another important consideration. Among English-taught programmes that specify an IELTS minimum score, approximately half require an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, while around one in five requires 7.0 or higher.
Tuition fees also vary. Of the 1,579 English-taught programmes with available tuition information, 1,017 list no tuition fee. Some programmes charge fees, including €1,500 per semester in cases covered by Baden-Württemberg’s fee policy for non-EU students.
Students should also budget for semester contributions, accommodation, insurance, and everyday living expenses.
Free University Shortlisting Tool for Indian Students
The German University Shortlister helps students identify suitable postgraduate programmes based on their academic background, marks and test scores. It provides relevant programme information, including eligibility requirements and application deadlines, helping applicants narrow their options before beginning the application process.
Students can also explore detailed guides to English-taught Master’s programmes in Germany to understand course requirements, fees and deadlines.
Application timelines require particular attention. Although 15 July is a common winter-intake deadline, some universities close applications much earlier. Additionally, many programmes use uni-assist to process international applications, making advance planning essential.
Why Learning German Matters Beyond Admission
An English-taught degree can make studying in Germany more accessible, but German language proficiency can be valuable for everyday life, internships and employment opportunities. Many employers expect international graduates to communicate in German, with B2 or C1 proficiency useful for numerous roles.
To help students prepare, Reknown Edu Services offers German language classes in Bangalore, encouraging applicants to begin learning before moving abroad.
Check Degree Recognition Before Applying
Indian students should verify whether their three-year bachelor’s degree meets the
requirements of their intended German Master’s programme. They should also check the recognition status of their institution and qualification through Germany’s anabin database.
A free CGPA to German GPA converter can help students estimate their German grading equivalent using the Bavarian formula. However, individual universities may apply specific evaluation rules.
Transparent Study-Abroad Consulting Fees
Reknown Edu Services has published its full fee list to help students understand the cost of professional guidance before committing.
Its options include a free 30-minute consultation with Study Abroad Strategist Pratik Jain, a
₹7,500 profile review and shortlist service, a ₹25,000 Partner Network Route, an ₹85,000 Application Partnership covering applications to four universities, and a ₹1,50,000 Direct with Pratik package covering six universities and additional strategic support.
The company also explains how its partner-network arrangements work and states that students are informed in writing about the applicable payment arrangement for each university before applying.
