It’s been one year since Filmkar.com, a revolutionary platform connecting professionals across India’s film industry, officially launched. What started as a simple idea back in 2019 has evolved into a game-changing digital hub for aspiring filmmakers, actors, casting directors, and technicians across the country.
The driving force behind this innovation is JJ Sharma, a passionate filmmaker and educator who understands firsthand the challenges faced by those entering the industry. “The idea came to me when I saw my own students—bright, creative minds—struggling to showcase their talents and find opportunities,” recalls Sharma. “There was no single platform where everyone—from actors to technicians—could connect and collaborate efficiently.”
This problem became even more obvious when aspiring filmmakers were left to navigate the cluttered world of social media—Instagram, Facebook, X—hoping to land roles or find collaborators. The digital space felt fragmented, overwhelming, and inefficient. Frustrated by this lack of structure, Sharma decided to change the game—and Filmkar.com was born.
A Vision Turned Reality
Sharma’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2014 with the launch of Macwin Studio & Cine Academy, a venture aimed at empowering emerging filmmakers. The academy gained momentum quickly and continues to nurture talent till today. In 2017, he launched Cinemandi.com, an ambitious online platform aimed at uniting all local camera and shooting equipment rental agencies across Karnataka under one roof. While the venture was short-lived and had to shut down within a year, it proved to be a significant learning experience, offering valuable insights into the challenges of building a tech-driven rental network in the film industry.
Undeterred by the setback, Sharma redirected his focus toward addressing a recurring challenge faced by his students and other filmmakers— the difficulty of connecting talented individuals with the right opportunities. Recognizing a wider gap in the Indian film industry, he set out to build a centralized and accessible networking platform. This vision sparked the idea for Filmkar.com in 2019. Drawing on his previous experience, Sharma started working with his web development team to turn the vision into reality, steadily refining the platform through the challenges of the pandemic. A pilot version of Filmkar.com was finally released in April 2021.
The pilot version was tested with a small group of trusted industry peers, including his students, collaborators, and a few engineering friends. The feedback was encouraging, and it helped refine the platform into what it is today.
Momentum Builds Across Karnataka
In 2023, the fully developed online platform Filmkar.com expanded its reach across Karnataka as part of a trial phase. Filmkar.com received endorsements from several iconic figures in the Kannada film industry, including 8-time National Award winner P. Sheshadri, V. Manohar, Jayamala, B. Suresh, and others. Their support gave the platform even more credibility as it prepared for a nationwide rollout.
On April 9, 2024, on the eve of the Ugadi festival, Filmkar.com was officially launched across India — and since then, it has evolved into a vibrant ecosystem for film professionals of all kinds.
