Women Leading the Wave of Change: How Elsie Gabriel and the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust Empowers Women

Women in Marine Conservation

By Special Correspondent

As International Women’s Day approaches, we celebrate the extraordinary power of women’s leadership and resilience in shaping a sustainable future.

At the forefront of this movement is Elsie Gabriel, an award-winning environmentalist and ocean literacy educator, a PADI and HSA USA certified diver, whose vision has redefined climate action and inclusivity in marine conservation.

Since 2008, under her guidance, the Women Achievers Awards have honored trailblazing women from diverse fields—scientists, conservationists, educators, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and artists—who are breaking barriers and inspiring change.

In 2005, when Mumbai was submerged by unprecedented floods, Elsie Gabriel witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of climate change. Amidst the chaos, she rallied a group of determined women and citizen scientists, establishing the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust which works with a diverse team of experts. This grassroots initiative not only responded to an immediate crisis but also sowed the seeds for a long-term mission: to integrate ocean literacy into the educational fabric of schools and colleges. By inspiring young people to pursue careers as ocean scientists, researchers, and conservation advocates, Elsie underscored a simple truth—without saving our oceans, we cannot effectively combat climate change.

Elsie’s remarkable journey extends globally. As the Founder of The Ocean School India and the National Coordinator for Oceans for The Climate Reality Project India-Asia (trained by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in Rio de Janeiro), she has dedicated her career to making ocean conservation accessible and inclusive. Her contributions to the Venice Declaration on Ocean Literacy and several United Nations COPs and ocean conferences are remarkable, her role as India Ambassador for Ocean Quest Global highlight her commitment to international environmental frameworks and grassroots change. Recognized as a UNESCO Green Citizen for her pioneering ocean literacy projects, which have empowered indigenous and coastal communities, divers, surfers, and youth worldwide, she is also an Associate Member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame.

Furthermore, Elsie’s groundbreaking work in inclusive scuba diving training—introducing the Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) USA disability-inclusive certification program across regions like Sri Lanka, the Maldives, the Andamans, Lakshadweep Islands, Kerala, Goa, and the Philippines as Director of PHSA, ensures that the ocean is accessible to all. Her leadership has not only transformed lives but also built bridges between global policy and community action, making her a true champion of the seas.

Says Elsie,”Our mission is to transform our relationship with the ocean by making marine conservation and the healing powers of the oceans accessible to everyone specially in the developing countries. I believe that educating young minds  through our Ocean Literacy Book and empowering citizen scientists are essential to building a sustainable future. At the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust, we’re bridging the gap between global policies and grassroots action, inspiring the next generation of ocean scientists and environmental advocates. Saving our oceans isn’t just about conservation—it’s about securing a resilient future for our planet.”

As we honor International Women’s Day, Elsie Gabriel’s legacy and the transformative work of the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust serve as powerful reminders: When women lead, the ripple effects of change are felt far and wide, inspiring a future where our oceans—and our planet—thrive.
