Success Story: After Losing Her Father to Cancer, IAS Sonal Goel Takes Her Awareness Mission to Everest Base Camp
From Personal Loss to a Powerful Social Mission
Senior IAS officer Sonal Goel, a Tripura cadre officer, has taken her message of cancer awareness, healthy living, and a drug-free India to the heights of Everest Base Camp.
During her challenging 14-day journey, Sonal Goel hoisted the Tricolor at an altitude of 5,364 meters and used the achievement to deliver a powerful message to India’s youth: “Choose Dreams, Not Drugs.”
Her journey was not simply an adventure or a personal achievement. It was also an effort to raise awareness about cancer, encourage healthy lifestyles, and inspire young people to stay away from addiction and focus on their dreams.
Sonal believes that when the energy of young people is channelled in the right direction, they can not only achieve their personal goals but also contribute to shaping the future of the country.
A Tribute to Her Father
For Sonal Goel, the mission has a deeply personal connection.
She lost her father to cancer in 2023. Following his death, she resolved to continue working towards creating greater awareness about cancer in society.
She initially began spreading awareness through social media, where she has nearly 2.5 million plus followers. Her journey to Everest Base Camp has now provided her with another platform to take this message further.
At Everest Base Camp, she carried the Tricolour, a cancer awareness ribbon, and the message “Choose Dreams, Not Drugs.”
For Sonal, every effort that can help prevent another family from experiencing the pain caused by cancer would be a meaningful tribute to her father.
Reaching Everest Base Camp was not a decision made overnight. According to Sonal Goel, the achievement was the result of nearly two years of preparation.
During this period, she participated in several high-altitude treks, marathons, and religious pilgrimages to prepare herself physically and mentally for the challenge.
Her preparation included expeditions and events such as:
- Rupin-Supin Valley trek in Uttarakhand
- Hatu Peak in Himachal Pradesh
- Tungnath Trek
- Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
- Ladakh Half Marathon
- Mussoorie Marathon
These experiences helped her build the physical endurance, mental strength, and discipline required to undertake the demanding journey to Everest Base Camp.

140 Kilometers Through Challenging Conditions
During the 14-day expedition, Sonal trekked approximately 140 kilometers through sub-zero temperatures, low oxygen levels, difficult terrain, and limited resources.
The mountains, she says, taught her important lessons about discipline, patience, teamwork, and mental strength.
According to Sonal, achieving any major goal requires more than physical strength. It requires determination, consistent effort, a strong mindset, and the support of family.
Her Everest journey therefore became a reflection of the same values she wants young people to adopt in their own lives.
A Message to India’s Youth: “Choose Dreams, Not Drugs”
One of the central messages of Sonal Goel’s Everest mission was “Choose Dreams, Not Drugs.”
She believes that India’s youth have enormous potential and that their energy needs to be channelled towards productive goals, education, health, and personal growth.
Sonal also believes that initiatives such as the Indian government’s Drug-Free India Campaign can succeed only when society, particularly young people, actively participates.
A drug-free India, she believes, is an important step towards building a developed and self-reliant India by 2047.
From Administrative Responsibility to Social Responsibility
Sonal Goel currently serves as Secretary to the Government of Tripura. Alongside her administrative responsibilities, she remains actively involved in social awareness initiatives.
Her decision to use the Everest Base Camp expedition as a platform for cancer awareness and the drug-free India message reflects her effort to connect a personal achievement with a larger social purpose.
Standing at 5,364 metres above sea level, with the Tricolour in hand and a message for India’s youth, Sonal Goel’s Everest journey represents more than reaching a destination.
It is a story of personal loss transformed into purpose, years of preparation turned into achievement, and an individual mission turned into a message for society.
Her message remains simple: Choose your dreams, take care of your health, and stay away from addiction.
