What Small Businesses Should Actually Do About AI Search

The customer looking for a lawyer in  Jaipur or a or a commercial cleaning company in Gurgaon is no longer typing a search term and scrolling ten blue links. She is asking ChatGPT which company to call. She is reading the AI summary Google puts above the results. She is checking the business profile, the review replies, the photos, and deciding in about forty seconds.

Most small and medium businesses have not adjusted for this. They still treat their website as a brochure, their Google listing as a formality, and their marketing as five disconnected vendors who never speak to each other. That gap is now costing them real revenue.

Here is what actually works.

Fix the Google Business Profile first

For a local business, the Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage asset you have, and it is free. It is also the one most owners set up once in 2019 and never touched again.

Start with the primary category. It is the single strongest ranking signal in the local map pack, and choosing “contractor” when you should have chosen “pest control service” will cost you more than any amount of blog writing will win back. Add every service you offer as a separate service item with its own description. Load real photos, not stock images, and add new ones monthly. Google reads image freshness as an activity signal.

Then handle reviews properly. Volume matters, but so does recency and response rate. A profile with 60 reviews and owner replies on every one outperforms a profile with 200 reviews and silence. Answer the Q&A section yourself before a competitor or a confused customer answers it for you.

One warning that catches businesses out. Google retired the old business.site free websites, which means thousands of profiles now link to a dead URL. If your listing still points there, you are sending every click into a 404. Check it today.

Write for how AI answers, not how search engines used to rank

AI search does not reward keyword density. It rewards being the clearest, most specific, most verifiable source on a question.

That means answering real customer questions directly on your site, in plain language, with the answer in the first two sentences rather than buried under 400 words of preamble. It means publishing your prices, your service area, your process, and your credentials as facts rather than adjectives. Language models extract facts. They ignore marketing copy.

It also means consistency. Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical on your website, your Google profile, your Facebook page, and every directory that lists you. AI systems build an entity picture of your business from those scattered mentions. Inconsistency makes the picture blurry, and blurry businesses do not get recommended.

Add structured data markup to your pages so machines can read your services, locations, hours, and reviews without guessing. Get mentioned on sites the models already trust, which for most local businesses means trade associations, local news, chambers of commerce, and legitimate industry directories. Being cited elsewhere is what gets you cited in an AI answer.

Traditional search still decides who gets quoted

None of this replaces search fundamentals. AI systems pull from pages that already rank. A site that loads in six seconds, breaks on mobile, has no internal linking, and has not published anything since 2022 will not be the source any model picks.

Fast pages, clean site structure, working links, fresh content, and genuine local relevance are still the base layer. AI visibility is built on top of it, not instead of it.

Why fragmentation is the real problem

The reason most small businesses fail at this is not knowledge. It is coordination.

The web developer does not talk to the SEO freelancer. The social media person has never seen the Google Business Profile. The ads agency optimizes for clicks while the site converts at one percent. Every one of those vendors is doing their piece competently, and the business still loses.

Search, AI visibility, local listings, content, social proof, and paid media now feed the same signal set. When one team owns all of it, the blog post supports the map ranking, the reviews support the AI citation, and the ad spend goes toward pages that actually convert. When six vendors own pieces of it, nothing compounds.

For an SME, one accountable partner running all channels is not a luxury. It is the only way the work adds up.
