Manmeet Singh: Creating the Next Generation of Filmmakers

Some professional journeys begin with a carefully planned destination. Others take an unexpected turn and eventually lead to a purpose far greater than the original plan. The journey of Manmeet Singh is one such story. From building a career in the wedding and events industry to learning filmmaking, bringing professional film education to North India, mentoring young creators, and envisioning a dedicated platform for children, his path has been shaped by curiosity, persistence, and a desire to create opportunities for others.

With a Diploma in Filmmaking, Manmeet Singh has gradually evolved from a businessman and filmmaker into a film educator and mentor. His story demonstrates how one unexpected experience can sometimes become the starting point for an entirely new chapter.

From Business to Filmmaking

Before entering the world of filmmaking, Manmeet Singh was already established in the wedding and events industry and had experience working on large-scale events. A major turning point came while organising Chandigarh Establishment Day, where he wanted to create a theme song for the event.

He approached a filmmaker for the project, but after receiving payment, the filmmaker failed to deliver the promised work and eventually walked away. What could have remained simply a frustrating professional experience became a moment of self-realisation for Manmeet.

Instead of continuing to depend on others for his creative ideas, he decided to learn filmmaking himself.

He travelled to Delhi and joined the Institute of Moving Images (IMI) to formally understand the craft of filmmaking. This decision changed the direction of his professional life.

Recognising a Gap in Film Education

While learning filmmaking, Manmeet Singh began noticing a larger gap in the industry. There were several institutions offering education in animation and other creative fields, but professional filmmaking education was comparatively limited in North India.

Rather than seeing the gap simply as a challenge, he saw it as an opportunity.

His association with the Institute of Moving Images eventually led him to bring its franchise to North India, making filmmaking education more accessible to aspiring filmmakers in the region.

This marked an important transition in his journey. He was no longer learning filmmaking only for himself. He was beginning to create opportunities for people who wanted to enter the field but lacked accessible avenues for professional learning.

From Filmmaker to Film Educator

As Manmeet became more involved in film education, his attention increasingly turned towards younger audiences.

He noticed that children and teenagers were growing up in an environment where creating videos for platforms such as Instagram and YouTube had become increasingly common. However, being able to record a video was very different from understanding filmmaking, storytelling, camera techniques, content creation, and responsible storytelling.

This observation inspired Manmeet to work directly with children and introduce them to filmmaking.

Through his association with the Global Youth Film Festival, he began training young students in filmmaking and storytelling. The children were encouraged to create films around meaningful subjects, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Over time, his work reached more than 1,000 students, helping young learners move beyond simply consuming digital content and understand the creative process behind it.

For Manmeet, this became more than teaching technical skills. It became an opportunity to encourage children to express their ideas, build confidence, and discover their own voices as storytellers.

Creating a Platform for Young Storytellers

His experience working with children eventually led him to a bigger question: once young people learn how to create meaningful content, where can they showcase it?

While platforms such as YouTube provide enormous opportunities for creators, the sheer volume and variety of online content can make it difficult for parents to determine what is appropriate and meaningful for younger audiences.

This led to the vision behind Showbizz Originals, a platform focused on children and content created by children.

The idea is rooted in a simple belief: children should not only be audiences consuming stories; they should also have the opportunity to create and tell their own stories.

Through this vision, Manmeet aims to provide young creators with a space where they can showcase their creativity, learn from the filmmaking process, and explore storytelling in a safe and meaningful environment.

Challenges Along the Way

The transition from business to filmmaking and education was not without obstacles. One of the biggest challenges was managing the constant travel between Chandigarh and Delhi while continuing his professional commitments in Chandigarh.

At the same time, filmmaking was not always viewed as a conventional career choice in Punjab. Careers such as singing and acting were more familiar to many families, while opportunities behind the camera were less understood.

Despite these challenges, Manmeet continued learning and balancing two different professional worlds. His determination to pursue filmmaking eventually became a foundation for his work as an educator.

A Vision for the Next Generation

Today, Manmeet Singh’s journey represents a progression from businessman to filmmaker, filmmaker to mentor, and mentor to educator.

His motivation is closely connected to his spiritual outlook, which has helped him remain grounded, patient, and focused while navigating professional challenges. For him, achievement is not limited to personal success. It is also about using knowledge and experience to create a positive impact on others.

His long-term vision is to build a global platform that is safe, meaningful, and empowering for children—a space where young people can express themselves, share their stories, and explore their creativity while parents feel confident about the environment.

Ultimately, Manmeet Singh’s story is about recognising opportunities within challenges. What began with a failed filmmaking project eventually inspired a much larger mission: to help children become storytellers and create opportunities for the next generation of filmmakers.
